Essaouira or Agafay?

Essaouira sits on Morocco's Atlantic coast, 2h30 from Marrakech by road: a UNESCO-listed medina, Atlantic cliffs, constant ocean wind. Access

Agafay is close to the city. Guests who land in Marrakech can be on the plateau the same evening and sleep in their own hotel or riad afterwards. The coast adds two and a half hours each way, usually an extra night, and a second set of logistics for every guest.

Wind and Weather

Essaouira is known for its Atlantic trade winds, strongest from April to September. They keep the coast cool, but they shape everything set up outdoors: canopies, lanterns, table décor. On the Agafay plateau, evenings are dry and clear for most of the year; nights cool after dark from November to February, so fires and warm arrangements are part of the setup, and in summer the evening starts later, once the heat has dropped.

Privacy

A beach is rarely a place that can be closed to everyone else. On the Agafay plateau, the whole site is privatised for one wedding per evening: no other guests, no passers-by, no other event within sight.

The Light

The coast offers an ocean sunset. The plateau offers golden hour over pale stone, the High Atlas on the horizon, and, once the last colour drains from the sky, the Milky Way above the table.

If Your Guests Want the Ocean Too

Couples with a longer stay sometimes give guests a day or two in Essaouira before or after the wedding. The wedding evening itself takes place on the plateau, with transfers from and back to each guest's accommodation in Marrakech.
