The idea in one sentence
Everyone who matters at one long table in the stone desert, the Atlas turning gold at sunset, the Milky Way by dessert, and nobody else on the plateau. That is a birthday at The Long Table Marrakech: a site in the Agafay desert, 40 minutes from the city, privatised for one group per evening, for 30 to 300 guests.
Who books a birthday in the desert
Three kinds of birthdays end up on the plateau. The round-number birthday, a 30th, 40th, 50th or 60th, where a restaurant feels too small for the occasion. The surprise birthday, where the guest of honour believes they are going to dinner and finds the plateau, the table and everyone waiting. And the family birthday across generations, where grandparents and grandchildren share the same table and the youngest get camels and pottery at sunset.
A fourth is common with groups flying in for a weekend: friends who make the desert their Saturday night, with the rest of the weekend spent in Marrakech.
How the evening runs
- Late afternoon: private vehicles collect every guest at their hotel or riad, about ninety minutes before sunset.
- Golden hour: welcome drinks facing the Atlas. Camel rides at sunset for those who want them.
- Sunset: pottery with local artisans, or a walk across the stone desert.
- Nightfall: the long table, dressed for the occasion. Mezze, a whole mechoui carved in front of the guests, pastilla, the dessert spread. The speeches and the birthday moment happen wherever you want them.
- After dinner: live Gnaoua music around the fire, then stargazing.
- Late evening: everyone is driven back to their door.
How a surprise birthday is organised
The surprise works because the guest of honour has a plausible plan: dinner, somewhere outside the city, with a few people. Arrivals are coordinated so the other guests reach the plateau first. The organiser briefs the team on what the person loves, and the table arrangements and surprise moments are composed around them. The transfer, the arrival on the plateau and the sight of the full table are the reveal; the rest of the evening follows naturally.
Group sizes and privacy
The desert birthday is designed for 30 to 300 guests. Whatever the number, the whole site is privatised: no other party, no adjacent tables, no hotel lobby to cross. For milestones, surprises and formats in more detail, see the luxury birthday in Marrakech page.
A birthday weekend
For a longer celebration, most groups make a weekend of it: the evening on the plateau, the rest of the stay in Marrakech, with time in the medina before everyone flies home.
When to celebrate
October to May gives clear evenings and mild days. Winter nights cool after dark, so fires and warm arrangements are part of the setup. Summer birthdays work with a later start, once the heat drops with the sun.
What the proposal includes
Everything in one proposal: private return transfers for every guest, welcome drinks at golden hour, camel ride, pottery or desert walk, the full Moroccan dinner, drinks composed for the evening, live Gnaoua music, stargazing and the hosting team. The proposal is built per group according to headcount and date, with a reply within 24 hours.
What to tell us
Whose birthday, how many guests, the preferred date, and whether it is a surprise. The rest is composed with you. The format is described in full on the birthday in the Agafay desert page, and the other things we host on the plateau on the private events in the Agafay hub.
